Board Members
The board of the Commission has at least seven members appointed under section 28 of the Crown Entities Act 2004

Chairman
The board's Chair is Professor Alan Merry, Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Auckland. He is a practising cardiac anaesthetist and chronic pain specialist, and works with both public and private patients, in serious medical emergencies and in managing chronic illness.
He led the Safe Anaesthesia Group of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative and currently chairs the Quality and Safety Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists. He is involved with a follow-on project with these (and other) organisations to improve the safety of anaesthesia world-wide through better standards, technology and education.
Professor Merry has a long-standing interest in safety and quality in health care. He co-chaired the New Zealand Medical Law Reform Group in the 1990s, and has conducted research into various aspects of safety in anaesthesia and surgery. He co-authored the book Safety and Ethics in Healthcare, A Guide to Getting it Right.

Staff
Chief Executive
The Commission's Chief Executive is Dr Janice Wilson who was formerly Deputy Director-General of the Population Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health.
She joined the Ministry in March 1993 as Director of Mental Health, and was also appointed to the position of Chief Psychiatric Advisor in July 1993, later called Chief Advisor, Mental Health. She was Deputy Director-General, Mental Health for seven years before taking up an expanded role that included a range of other Population Health services.
Prior to joining the Ministry, Dr Wilson was Manager of Mental Health Services for the Wellington Area Health Board and, prior to that, Acting Medical Superintendent of Porirua Hospital. A psychiatrist and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, she held the honorary position of President from May 1997 until June 1999.
Dr Wilson also holds a Diploma in Health Administration and a Certificate of Health Economics from Victoria University. She has worked clinically as a psychiatrist and as a manager in Mental Health Services.
