Patient safety: an educational competency

In this article from The Lancet the author looks at how attitudes to error reporting, teamwork and communication affect improvements to patient safety. Surveys show that changes are often hindered by existing cultures of individual blame and variances in attitude among health care workers.

The author asserts that lasting change will only be achieved through working with trainees to improve their teamwork and communication skills. Interactions with other health care professions should be encouraged and positive attitudes reinforced through clinical experience, certification and ongoing education.
