New Commission medical advisor receives quality award

24 Dec 2014 | Health Quality & Safety Commission

The Health Quality & Safety Commission congratulates Dr Iwona Stolarek for winning the CEO Award at the recent 2014 Quality Awards that recognised individuals and organisations across Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast district health boards (DHBs).

The CEO Award acknowledges someone who has made a significant contribution to health care in Wairarapa and Hutt Valley DHBs over the past year.

CEO of Hutt Valley and Wairarapa DHBs Graham Dyer spoke of Dr Stolarek’s achievements during 14 years of service to first Hutt Valley and later Wairarapa.

Dr Stolarek started at Hutt Valley DHB in 2000 as a specialist general medical physician, with duties including coordinating registrar and house surgeon teaching.

In 2004, she was appointed intern supervisor and led medical education, including establishing a clinical skills unit.

Dr Stolarek was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer in 2009 and Chief Medical Officer in 2010, her role expanding to incorporate Wairarapa DHB in 2013.

Mr Dyer said during her time at the DHBs Dr Stolarek was a patient safety and quality champion, working on and promoting clinical governance, and driving individual and departmental credentialling.

Receiving the CEO Award was an unexpected honour and a complete surprise, says Dr Stolarek.

‘I have had the privilege of working with great teams over the past 14 years without which these achievements wouldn't have been possible.’

Dr Stolarek starts at the Health Quality & Safety Commission in early January 2015 as medical advisor.
