Less than 20 per cent of all urgent readmissions can be deemed potentially avoidable, a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal says. The study was based on urgent readmissions that occurred over a six-month period at 11 hospitals between October 2002 and July 2006. The authors made the point that determination of whether a readmission is avoidable or not is highly subjective and cannot be based on administrative data alone. As such, it says this measure should be used with caution to gauge the quality of hospital care.
