Abstract submissions open for quality improvement scientific symposium

The Health Quality & Safety Commission is accepting poster and rapid-fire presentation abstracts for the 2016 quality improvement scientific symposium. Abstract submissions close on 9 August and can be made on the Commission website. The website includes guidelines to assist you with your abstract.

The symposium focuses on the science of health and health care improvement by highlighting research and methods.

Confirmed speakers are:

  • Mr Robert (Bob) Henderson, University of Auckland
  • Jen Morris, patient perspectives consultant, patient advocate and health care quality and safety researcher
  • Professor Nigel Grigg, professor of quality systems, Massey University
  • Dr John Krueger, MD, MPH. Chief Medical Officer & Associate Dean of Academic Affairs School of Community Medicine, University of Oklahoma Physicians (via skype).

Bob Henderson

Keynote speaker Bob Henderson is a member of the Commission board and has worked with the Commission’s Safe Surgery New Zealand programme. He brings a wealth of experience from his career in the Air Force and Air New Zealand.
Bob’s presentation will cover why even well-qualified people may make everyday errors and participants will learn a number of tools for building resilience to mitigate the impact of these errors.

Jen Morris

Jen Morris is a patient perspective consultant, patient advocate and health care quality and safety researcher from the University of Melbourne.

Jen will use story-telling from her own experiences to show how quality and safety is inextricably linked to human lives and experiences. Symposium participants will learn about:

  • evidence for patient engagement as an improvement strategy
  • methods for using the patient voice as evidence
  • the complex intersection between the systematic application of evidence
  • the need for individualisation.
