The survey has been running every three months in all district health boards (DHBs) since 2014.

A national selection of adult patients who spent at least one night in hospital during each survey sample period are invited to participate. Approximately 3,000 patients take part each time. Some DHBs conduct the survey on a weekly or fortnightly basis so that they have a continuous stream of patient feedback to act on.

Survey responses are anonymous unless patients choose to provide their contact details.
