This video features Dr. Mike Evans and Don Berwick discussing quality improvement in health care. Don Berwick is a former Administrator of the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and former CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
In the video Don describes a few principles, or characteristics, of scientific thinking. Dr. Evans then gives an example of routines one can practice to develop more scientific thinking along the lines of what Berwick described. A scientific thinker is a perpetually-curious person who never thinks they have the whole answer but is always willing to know what the next step to take is. They're not in the job of solving problems forever. They're in the job of taking the next step.
At the core is building a culture of constant curiosity about a world that you will never understand fully but you might take the next step to understand a little better.
