Medical students at The University of Auckland's school of medicine take hand hygiene seriously.
In mid-2014 a group of enthusiastic medical students on the Auckland campus decided to present ‘Gavin’s story’ – a student’s journey to hand hygiene excellence.
The video is an excellent example of frontline ownership, which the Hand Hygiene New Zealand programme promotes as a way of encouraging health care workers to develop local solutions to the barriers to best practice.
The video is quirky, fun and engaging, and entirely created by the students themselves. It’s not for everyone, but that’s the point – it’s a video for students by students to communicate the importance of hand hygiene to patient safety.
