The Health Quality & Safety Commission recently facilitated a successful workshop for members of local child and youth mortality review panels. The workshop took place in Nelson on 6–7 November 2018 and coincided with the 70th annual scientific meeting of the Paediatric Society of New Zealand.
The workshop was an opportunity to bring together coordinators and chairs of local child and youth mortality review groups to share with and learn from each other.
58 people attended the workshop from across the country, including district health board staff and members of the Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee.
Keynote speakers included Associate Professor Nicola Atwool who talked about a public approach to addressing inequality for vulnerable children, Prof Annette Beautrais who discussed the relationship and effect between alcohol and suicide and Prof Denise Wilson who focused on the Commission’s work to make the Commission’s mortality review committees responsive to Māori.

The workshop was facilitated by Anna-Marie Frost, specialist for the Child and Youth Mortality Review and supported by the Commission’s mortality review committee secretariat.
