Contributory factors and potentially avoidable neonatal encephalopathy associated with perinatal asphyxia

13 Jul 2016 | Perinatal & Maternal Mortality Review Committee

This paper was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and reports on the findings of a study of neonatal encephalopathy cases.

The study reviewed all cases of neonatal encephalopathy in 2010–11, which arose following the onset of labor without any previous acute medical events in the final month of pregnancy.

The multi-disciplinary review determined the frequency of contributory factors, the proportion of potentially avoidable morbidity and mortality and identified themes for quality improvement.
