POMRC workshop brings data to life

8 May 2014 | Perioperative Mortality Review Committee

Two distinguished international speakers, an interactive hypothetical case study, and a doctor’s perspective on being a patient will be among the highlights of the annual workshop of the Perioperative Mortality Review Committee (POMRC).

Registrations are now open for POMRC’s annual conference, Bringing the Data to Life, to be held on 18 June at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington. The conference is hosted by the Health Quality & Safety Commission.

The conference’s keynote speeches will be given by professors Clifford Ko and Guy Ludbrook.

Professor Ko is an exceptional speaker who directs the division of research and optimal patient care at the American College of Surgeons. He oversees all its quality improvement programmes, including the college’s National Surgical Quality Improvement Programme (ACSNSQIP).

Professor Guy Ludbrook, professor of anaesthesia at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital, is an innovative thinker whose speeches promote discussion and debate. He has an interest in health care delivery, and is involved in exploring research and developments in perioperative care.

POMRC chair Dr Leona Wilson says both speakers will give their perspectives on the committee’s 2014 report.

“We’re delighted to have such distinguished, well-respected speakers to give an international context to the findings of the report,” she says.

Last year’s POMRC workshop was the first to feature an interactive hypothetical, which involves developing a case and asking a guest panel to comment. It was one of the workshop’s most popular events, and is to be repeated this year with a hypothetical perioperative case.

David Theobald, clinical director of the National Endoscopy Quality Improvement Programme, will present his reflections on perioperative care after cardiac surgery gave him a patient’s perspective on being in hospital.

There will also be an update on the Clinical Excellence Commission from CEO Clifford Hughes.
