15 Mar 2012 | Perioperative Mortality Review Committee
Dr Leona Wilson is the new Chair of the Perioperative Mortality Review Committee (POMRC). She takes over from Professor Iain Martin, who has chaired POMRC since it was established in April 2010.
Dr Cathy Ferguson has been elected as Deputy Chair.
POMRC reviews deaths following surgery and anaesthesia, and advises the Health Quality & Safety Commission (the Commission) on how to reduce the number of perioperative deaths in New Zealand.
POMRC recently published its first report, providing an overview of what is known about perioperative mortality in New Zealand, identifying gaps, and laying the foundation for the development of a national perioperative mortality review system.
Professor Alan Merry, Chair of the Commission, says Dr Wilson brings considerable experience and expertise to the role of POMRC Chair. He also thanked Professor Martin for his time as Chair.
“It is very gratifying to see the position of POMRC Chair pass from one set of capable hands to another, and to know Dr Wilson will be working with a talented group of people with a great deal of frontline clinical and health management expertise,” he says.
Dr Wilson is a specialist anaesthetist working in public and private practice in Wellington. She has trained and worked at a number of hospitals, including Kings College Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital in London, and Wellington Hospital, where she was the director of the Department of Anaesthesia from 1998 until 2003. She also holds a Masters of Public Health.
She is a member of the governing Council of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and provides expert advice to a number of organisations in New Zealand, including the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and the Competence Assessment Team of the Medical Council of New Zealand. She was the first female anaesthetist to be elected President of ANZCA (2008 – 10), and the first New Zealander to hold the position. She also holds an ONZM and is a Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors.
Deputy Chair Dr Cathy Ferguson is a Wellington-based otolaryngologist. She has a part time public hospital appointment and a part-time private practice.
Dr Ferguson is a Councilor of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and serves on the Education Board, the Board of Surgical Education and Training, and the Board of Surgical Research. She has been a member of the College’s Australia and New Zealand Audits of Surgical Mortality Steering Group since 2006. She is the President-elect of the New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
