As part of the Commission’s 2012 quality and safety challenge, Hutt Valley District Health Board (DHB) undertook a project to gather patient stories, to generate and support quality improvement projects and improve patient experience at the DHB.

Patient engagement is now part of project planning at the DHB, and patient stories have a high profile as an effective way of gathering patient’s perspectives.

As a smaller provider the DHB was mindful its experience would be helpful to other organisations where video recording is not readily available. A toolkit (available for download below) was developed for smaller health care providers, which includes a guide for undertaking recorded patient/family/whānau interviews.
