In 2013, on behalf of the sector, the Health Quality & Safety Commission developed a directory of consumer organisations, groups and individuals in the health and disability sector – including links to district health boards (DHBs) and other government organisations with a role in advising or seeking feedback from health and disability consumers.
The directory has since been replaced with a list of DHB consumer councils. More information about consumer councils can be found here: www.hqsc.govt.nz/our-programmes/partners-in-care/work-programmes/consumer-representation/consumer-councils.
Consumer councils are key mechanisms through which consumers can participate in how health and disability services are delivered in different communities. In this way, consumer representatives can provide feedback on current services and tell providers what is really important to them. They can give advice and input into strategic direction and planning of services.
