Consider becoming a Stanford self-management programme leader – the training is free to community leaders and potential volunteers, but spaces are limited.
Counties Manukau Health, East Health Trust (PHO) will be holding a Leader Training in the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-management Programme on the following dates:
26th & 27th June (Thursday and Friday) 9:30am-4:30pm @ East Health Trust PHO
3th & 4th July (Thursday and Friday) 9:30am-4:30pm @ East Health Trust PHO
The trainers are Parvin Kapila, David Harrison and Rebecca Shaw – all Master Trainers. The training will be held in the training room at East Health, 260 Botany Rd, Howick (behind East Care A&M building).
This programme is always led by two trained leaders who follow a detailed manual. It is a six-week programme meeting weekly for 2 ½ hour sessions. Each session includes several activities and time for a cup of tea and informal sharing. Usually, between 12-15 people attend the programme plus the two co-leaders.
This training is for volunteers or peer leaders who wish to help provide self management programmes in the community. Once trained, leaders are expected to co-lead at least one programme in the six months following their training. We ask that volunteer leaders commit to co-leading at least two programmes in the year following the training.
Participants of this training will receive the My Health Our Life programme manual (the name of the programme in Counties Manukau) and the Living a Healthy Life With a Chronic Condition resource book. If they successfully complete the training and meet the standard required in the practise sessions, they will then be qualified to run a programme with another trained leader. To become a leader, the full attendance of the four days of training is necessary.
People who attend the entire training will receive a Certificate of Attendance, and once a leader has co-lead one programme, they will receive a Stanford Leader Certificate.
The trainers will strive to do an observation of a new leader in their first programme to ensure that they are confident leaders, adhering to guidelines. The Trainers will remain available for mentoring and advice.
Volunteers receive a $100.00 gift voucher when they co-lead a programme in the community.
