Commission partners with patient portal to provide Let's PLAN resource

Patients now have easier access to the Health Quality & Safety Commission’s Let’s PLAN for better care resource, with the Commission partnering with the myPractice Health365 patient portal.

For people using an online Health365 portal, it makes patient interactions with a GP easier and more convenient. It is used to make appointments, check lab results and access records including immunisation history. Let’s PLAN is now being included in appointment reminder alerts.

Let’s PLAN is a resource to help consumers prepare for a visit to the GP or other primary health professional. It encourages people to plan ahead and ask questions so they fully understand their diagnosis and treatment. It also suggests questions they can ask pharmacy staff when they pick up their medicine.

"The Commission approached us to consider putting Let’s PLAN in the portal," says myPractice creator Dr Ashwin Patel.

"Let’s PLAN fit in with our thoughts about how to get patients involved in their own care and interacting with their practices.

"Improving patient engagement is the driving force behind the portal. There’s a lot of information available, including what lab results mean and consumer information about medicines."

Dr Patel says with GP consultations being time limited, it is important patients are prepared in advance for their consultation. Sending Let’s PLAN to patients gives them time to think about what they need to discuss at their appointment.

"If patients have thought about the questions they need answered, it’s easier to get things done in the consultation time, instead of as you’re leaving going 'oops I forgot to ask about this'," he says.

"Combining Let’s PLAN and the portal means practitioners can deliver better services and patients can have good communication and their questions answered. It’s great to see the Commission encouraging good communication and we’re pleased to be partnering with them."

The Commission is keen to see Let's PLAN available on all patient portals and has approached vendors.
