Waikato District Health Board (DHB) recently held their inaugural patient experience week (25–29 April 2016) and have produced a report and video highlighting their achievements. The week is part of a global initiative to reflect on patient's experiences and celebrate health care professional's efforts to improve them.
This was the first year Waikato DHB participated so it was an opportunity to learn how staff, patients and the public would engage with such an event.
The main activities centered around six patient stories that were shared digitally and in print. Staff engagement was captured on comment cards which asked them to complete the statement 'I made a difference by…'. Patients also completed comment cards with the statement 'You made a difference by...' to highlight how staff had contributed positively to their experience while in hospital. The cards were displayed in wards and clinic areas with the most creative area winning morning tea.
Waikato DHB also launched its first Instagram campaign, with the use of a travelling 'instaframe'. Staff had their photo and a comment about how they had made a difference posted on Instagram and in a Facebook album. Patients were also invited to get involved.
The week's activities were captured in a short video clip which was posted on the staff intranet and Waikato DHB Facebook page. The full report and video are available by clicking the link below.
