Taranaki District Health Board (DHB) has taken a patient- and family/whānau-centred approach to car parking after patients claimed the stress of finding a park may preventing them coming for treatment.
A new system has been created which gives patients and visitors priority at Taranaki Base Hospital. Taranaki DHB service improvement advisor Mary Bird said the aim was to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.
A survey of the parking situation in February found on one day only seven percent of the more than 800 parks were available. However, in more recent monitoring, up to half of the parks were available at 11am and 3pm.
