Call for new consumer council members – Counties Manukau Health

6 Nov 2018 | Partners in Care

Counties Manukau Health has a Consumer Council who represent the interests of consumers. Could you contribute to their vision of providing care that is truly patient and family/whānau-centred?

Members bring a consumer and family/whānau perspective to the development of Counties Manukau Health plans, policies, publications and operational decisions, related to hospital and outpatient care.

The key functions of our council are to:

  • represent the interests of consumers by objectively communicating their views to Patient and Whānau Centered Care Board and Counties Manukau Health
  • provide strategic advice on consumer engagement activities within the scope outlined
  • seek feedback or input from networks which will contribute to the work of the Consumer Council.

This is a voluntary position and the time commitment involved is four to eight hours per month, including preparation and meeting time, with an expectation that you are able to attend a monthly meeting which is held on a Thursday afternoon (second Thursday of the month). You must be prepared to serve on the council for two years. You will receive a meeting attendance fee and recognition of travel expenses.

We are looking for a new member to join our team. Key strengths required include:

  • experience and some understanding of the health system as a patient and/or whānau member who has used the Counties Manukau Health services
  • personal experience of Counties Manukau Health: hospital, ambulatory (outpatient) or community services within the last two to three years
  • experience or ability to represent one or more of the following areas:
    • an Asian/South East Asian/Indian perspective and wider community view
    • the perspective of family with preschool and school age children
    • the views of those in the 20–40 years age bracket.
  • strong consumer advocacy focus
  • good communication skills.

We are building a consumer council that represents the diverse population that we serve in Counties Manukau. This includes a range of cultures, ethnicity and age groups, so if you have passion for helping make a difference to the people of our community this may be of interest.
