The falls prevention module for the Releasing Time to Care (The Productive Ward) toolkit has been customised for the New Zealand environment by the Health Quality & Safety Commission. It has been adapted from the version developed by Queensland Health.
The New Zealand falls module is an addition to the suite of Releasing Time to Care tools currently used in hospitals. It draws on the guidance, evidence-based tools and resources developed through the national reducing harm from falls programme.
The Commission’s quality and safety markers show a significant improvement in processes and outcomes in reducing falls with serious harm, as measured by the number of patients that have fractured their hip, associated with a falls, while in hospital.
The challenge is to maintain vigilance in this area and sustain a strong quality improvement focus on integrated falls and fracture prevention as a top patient safety priority. We hope the New Zealand falls module adds to the tools and resources to help us achieve this.
A small number of printed modules have been sent to each DHB and an electronic version is available to download below or to view on the Qualitas Consortium website.
