Open for better care was a national patient safety campaign coordinated by the Health Quality & Safety Commission from 2013–16. The campaign focused on reducing harm in the areas of:
- healthcare associated infections (surgical site infections [SSIs])
- medication safety.
The campaign was launched on 17 May 2013 by the Associate Minister of Health, Hon Jo Goodhew and concluded on 30 June 2016.
From 14 April to 30 September 2014, the campaign focused on reducing perioperative harm. District health boards (DHBs) and private providers were encouraged to hold local/regional launches for the topic.
There were a range of activities and resources throughout the six-month focus, associated with key interventions to reduce harm from surgery.
The campaign team worked closely with the Safe Surgery NZ team, DHB perioperative harm champions and regional campaign groups to determine which promotions DHBs and private providers would like to take part in.
