Surgical safety culture survey report 2019

10 Sep 2019 | Safe Surgery NZ

The 2019 surgical safety culture survey was undertaken by Mobius Research and Strategy, to assist in evaluation of the Health Quality & Safety Commission's Safe Surgery NZ programme. This report presents the results of the 2019 survey.

This is the third iteration of the survey, following a baseline survey in 2015 and a follow-up survey in 2017.

The 2019 survey shows that, in most instances, people work together as a well-coordinated team.

Key findings include:

  • a 30 percent increase in participants saying team discussions (briefings and debriefings) are common
  • a 20 percent surgical teams always discussing the operative plan.
  • a 14 percent increase in surgical team members from different disciplines always discussing patients’ conditions and progress.
