The Commission has produced a guide for DHBs using the internationally recognised Global Trigger Tool (GTT) to help reduce patient harm in hospitals.

It provides useful information about using the GTT, including managing data, standard operating procedures, reporting, triggers, performance indicators, and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Click the link at the bottom of this page to access the guide and its appendices, plus the Florida Classification Tool list and subcategory definitions.

The GTT E-learning course has been developed by the Commission as a basic introduction to the GTT process to support the GTT programme in New Zealand DHBs. It comprises three modules:

  1. Background to the GTT
  2. GTT Methodology
  3. Data analysis and presentation.

Each module takes 20-30 minutes to complete. A certificate of completion can be printed off at the completion of the course.

To access the course:
Go to the ‘Learnonline’ website:
Create an account as per the instructions on the website
Click on ‘course catalogue’
Click on ‘Health Quality & Safety Commission’ and you will see the GTT course is listed.
