This stage focuses on engaging people with the project.
As the project progresses, it is important to continue engaging with senior leaders, staff and consumers. This reflects the partnership approach of co-design. Updating your elevator pitch regularly helps you engage with and promote the work of Kōrero mai to stakeholders throughout the co-design process.
Engage stakeholders
Previous Kōrero mai project teams recruited many different consumers by:
- distributing posters and leaflets
- working with local consumer health groups and specific health teams to contact people, for example, Māori, Pacific and Asian consumers, and consumers with disabilities (have a look at Engaging with consumers – a guide for DHBs)
- asking staff members on the project team to help recruit consumers.
Think about how you can communicate and engage with staff, and what is the most appropriate way for each group. Kōrero mai project teams used various approaches, for example:
- presenting on Kōrero mai at staff meetings
- advertising the project on the hospital intranet and external websites, screensavers and in the DHB’s weekly newsletter
- approaching staff directly (have your elevator pitch ready)
- having staff drop-in sessions in appropriate areas and providing updates at handovers and in clinical newsletters
- communicating with the wider management team through the ward services manager and clinical operations manager.
