Every day, the health and disability system touches lives in countless ways across the country. To help it work as safely, effectively and responsively as possible, Te Tāhū Hauora is coordinating the development of a system safety strategy for Aotearoa New Zealand.
We are taking a codesign approach to developing this strategy, building on Aotearoa New Zealand’s commitment to improving healthcare safety and reducing harm, as outlined in the Government Policy Statement (GPS) on Health 2024–27.
This brings together a variety of voices and experiences – consumers, healthcare workers, health agencies, and the wider health and disability sector – to create a shared understanding of what system safety means, tailored to Aotearoa New Zealand's unique needs.
An agreed strategy will be released late 2025/2026.
