Looking to the future for infection prevention and control in residential care

Infection prevention and control Aged residential care
19 October 2022
2:30 PM  - 3:30 PM
Online

Many people involved in infection prevention and control (IPC) are aiming to get back to ‘business as usual’. As we move forward, it is important to apply what we’ve learned from the pandemic to other areas of IPC. It is also time to take stock of how our IPC programmes comply with Ngā paerewa Health and disability services standard NZS 8134:2021.

This webinar will include two presentations that address these topics.

Tanya Jackways will discuss one of the newer tools for IPC that we can apply to other outbreaks such as norovirus, and Claire Underwood will guide us through section 5.3 Antimicrobial stewardship programme and implementation.

Who should attend?

Residential care managers, registered nurses and IPC leads, Te Whatu Ora district IPC support staff, IPC professionals and others involved in implementing IPC programmes in the residential care setting.

Our speakers

Claire Underwood, Principal advisor for the HealthCERT team [Meeting the Ngā paerewa Health and disability services standard infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship subsection 5.3].

Claire worked for over 20 years as a registered nurse in the UK and Aotearoa New Zealand, holding positions in medical and surgical nursing. She then specialised in IPC and worked in the public and private sector as a clinical nurse specialist for over 11 years.

Claire joined the HealthCERT team in November 2021.

Tanya Jackways, Principal advisor infection prevention and control, Ministry of Health  [From COVID-19 to norovirus – managing future outbreaks better].

An IPC nurse specialist for over 25 years in the public and private sector, Tanya was involved in the independent review of the COVID-19 clusters in aged residential care in 2020.

Tanya joined the Ministry of Health IPC team in May 2020 to assist with the Ministry’s pandemic response and to improve IPC across the health and disability system.
