The Perioperative Mortality Review Committee (POMRC) is holding four regional workshops to introduce a web-based system for reviewing local perioperative deaths.

Background

The Perioperative Mortality Review Committee reports annually on perioperative mortality in New Zealand, analysing different areas of clinical importance each year.

Starting in 2016, a working group including POMRC members, pilot site representatives and clinical leaders began working on developing a national, web-based system for health service providers and district health boards (DHBs) to review local perioperative deaths.

The aim is to better understand the factors that contribute to perioperative deaths and identify ways to improve the quality and safety of surgery and save lives. The findings from local reviews will also be used to support quality improvement initiatives, using New Zealand-specific data.

The POMRC tier 1 project is currently being piloted in several DHBs for a six-month period, ending in March 2019. The next step following the piloting phase is to roll out the system to all DHBs.

The POMRC tier 1 workshops will consist of a ‘how to’ training guide and an opportunity to go through the form and ask questions.

A networking lunch will follow.
