Te Tāhū Hauora Health Quality & Safety Commission offers a range of quality improvement education for the health and disability sector. This includes the Improving together education series, and other quality improvement education supported or developed by Te Tāhū Hauora.

Micro-credentials in health quality improvement available through the Improving together programme
Te Tāhū Hauora offers two micro-credentials on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework:
- Intermediate health quality improvement (micro-credential). This is available through our Improving together: Facilitators programme and is equivalent to 20 credits (20 × 10 notional learning hours) at level 4.
- Advanced health quality improvement (micro-credential). This is available through our Improving together: Advisors programme and is equivalent to 40 credits (40 × 10 notional learning hours) at level 5.
Improving together
This programme provides foundation-level quality improvement knowledge and skills for everybody participating in health and disability service improvement, consumers and the workforce. This ‘introduction’ is to help everyone in the sector to understand the importance of improving quality and safety in health care. Improving together in an Aotearoa New Zealand context means understanding our responsibilities as Te Tiriti partners to ensure equity of health outcomes and the impact our history of colonisation has on the health and wellbeing of Māori.

- For everyone in the health and disability sector, consumers, whānau and the workforce.
- Free online e-learning: 3 modules over 1.5 hours.
- Complete in your own time, at your own pace.
- Access the module on Ko Awatea.
This programme provides participants with a basic knowledge of quality improvement and safety science, and an understanding of simple quality and safety tools.
Details:
- For people interested in undertaking and participating in a quality improvement project as a team member.
- Delivered online (via Zoom): Eight two-hourly sessions over four months.
The programme develops and expands on the improvement skills and knowledge required to become an effective facilitator of change in the participants’ area of work.
Details:
- For health and disability sector workers who have a significant interest in learning how to improve health care delivery at a practical level and who can lead a project in their work area.
- Each participant undertakes a quality improvement project during the programme.
- A blend of in-person workshops and online sessions (delivered via Zoom). In addition, there is a significant amount of self-directed learning, course work and project work.
- This is a six-month programme representing a commitment of approximately 210 hours' time.
- Intermediate health quality improvement (micro-credential). This is available through our Improving together: Facilitators programme and is equivalent to 20 credits (20 × 10 notional learning hours) at level 4.

This programme develops and expands on the improvement skills and knowledge required to become an effective facilitator of change. The curriculum is designed for health care professionals who have a major portion of their work focused on change, improvement and/or innovation.
Details:
- For health care professionals who have a full-time role or a major portion of their work focused on quality systems and improvement.
- A blend of in-person workshops and online sessions (delivered via Zoom). In addition, there is a significant amount of self-directed learning, course work and project work which is approximately 0.2 full time (FTE) for each participant.
- Each participant undertakes a quality improvement project during the programme.
- This is a 9–10-month programme.
- Advanced health quality improvement (micro-credential). This is available through our Improving together: Advisors programme and is equivalent to 40 credits (40 × 10 notional learning hours) at level 5.

An opportunity for health leaders to explore contemporary challenges and opportunities for quality and safety in the Aotearoa health and disability system.

Learning from harm education programme
This programme explores the essential components of a high-quality health care harm review and gives participants the opportunity to participate in a simulated harm review as a member of the review team.
- For all people who participate in health care harm reviews, including consumers, whānau and the health and disability workforce.
- Ten hours of online self-directed learning and your choice of an in-person or virtual workshop

Co-design module
The Commission has released an e-learning course, ‘Co-design in health: an introduction’. Co-design is a tool that brings together consumers, whānau and communities to ensure that multiple perspectives are reflected in the design, delivery and evaluation of services.

Restorative practice
The Commission is working in partnership with the Te Ngāpara Centre for Restorative Practice Victoria University of Wellington to deliver courses in restorative foundations and responses. Developed using a co-design approach, they are available from Victoria University of Wellington.

Human factors in health care
The e-learning module, Human Factors | Ngā Āhua Tangata in health care includes seven videos and is now available free to all health care professionals via the Ko Awatea platform.
Human Factors is the scientific discipline concerned with understanding the interactions between people and other parts of the systems they work within.
It applies theory, principles, data, and methods to design improvements that optimise both human wellbeing and system performance.
