What we do

  • Review and report on deaths using death-related data and information from health and social sectors, our stakeholders, and family and whānau.
  • Provide independent advice and recommendations for the health sector and wider community.
  • Identify opportunities and influence changes to improve systems and services with the goal of preventing avoidable mortality and morbidity.

How we do it

We carry out a range of activities to support this work. We:

  • collect and collate mortality data
  • apply mortality review methods
  • engage with stakeholders, the health sector and consumers
  • coordinate and support local mortality review within health districts
  • coordinate and develop written reports, factsheets, webinars and submissions
  • support the implementation of the mortality review decision-making tools
  • monitor the uptake and progress of recommendations.

We also ensure the National Mortality Review Committee He Mutunga Kore (the committee) and subject matter experts are supported in their analysis and interpretation of the information we gather.

Legislation

Our role is supported by legislation, the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022.
