Videos from the workshop: exploring shared goals of care in acute hospital settings

8th December, 2021

The Commission hosted a national workshop to:

  • explore current practice around discussing, developing and documenting shared goals of care for patients at risk of dying in hospital
  • identify clinical issues where further work is needed
  • seek agreement on underpinning clinical processes, scope and principles for future work.

This workshop was a first step towards understanding current issues and developing a national approach for shared goals of care for New Zealand. The next step will be to involve consumers to understand their perspectives and co-design solutions.

Videos of the following presentations from the morning session are available:

Patient deterioration programme and shared goals of care

Dr Alex Psirides, clinical lead for the patient deterioration programme
Health Quality & Safety Commission

The palliative care perspective

Dr Emma Merry, SMO palliative medicine
Hawke’s Bay DHB

DHB presentations on their work in shared goals of care

Equity in healthcare quality improvement

Dr Maria Poynter, public health medicine specialist
Health Quality & Safety Commission

Consumer perspectives and co-design principles

Laura Ellis, advisor – consumer engagement
Health Quality & Safety Commission

The afternoon session used an ‘unconferencing’ approach. Participants self-created the agenda. This allowed time and space for everyone to engage creatively around the topics that were most relevant and interesting to them. Here is the summary of this session.
