Healthcare-associated infection data

The infection prevention and control (IPC) programme leads the national Surgical Site Infection Improvement (SSII) programme for orthopaedic and cardiac surgery, the Hand Hygiene New Zealand (HHNZ) programme and the national healthcare-associated Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (HA-SAB) surveillance programme.

Each programme has measures to help us evaluate the success of our programme and determine whether the desired changes in practice have occurred. 

The following are links to process and outcome data reported by the IPC programme.

Surgical Site Infection Improvement programme 

The SSII programme measures antibiotic timing, antibiotic dosing, skin antisepsis and surgical site infection rates for cardiac and orthopaedic (hip and knee arthroplasty) surgery.

The SSII programme dashboard results are updated quarterly.

Hand Hygiene New Zealand programme

The HHNZ programme measures compliance with the World Health Organization’s ‘5 Moments for Hand Hygiene’ and HA-SAB rates.  

The HHNZ dashboard is updated three times per year.

Healthcare-associated S. aureus bacteraemia surveillance

HA-SAB rates are reported as part of the HHNZ programme. Collection of HA-SAB source data started in July 2022. 

Quarterly surveillance reports are sent directly to district teams. Surveillance reporting will move to a dashboard in 2024.
