Do you have personal or lived experience of sepsis? Are you interested in using your experiences to help improve our health system?
Te Tāhū Hauora Health Quality & Safety Commission (Te Tāhū Hauora) is looking for two people who have had personal experiences related to sepsis to join our national sepsis quality improvement working group:
Background
Te Tāhū Hauora is a Crown entity that functions under the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022. We lead and coordinate work across the health sector to:
• monitor and improve the quality and safety of services
• help providers improve the quality and safety of their services.
We particularly focus our work on Māori, Pacific and disabled populations.
The code of expectations for health entities’ engagement with consumers and whānau was published recently. It sets out how health entities must work with consumers, whānau and communities to plan, design, deliver and evaluate health services. We strive to lead the implementation of this code by example.
Project background
Sepsis is the body’s extreme and life-threatening response to an infection, it disproportionately affects Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
In 2022, Te Tāhū Hauora and Sapere (a research company) identified that the way sepsis is managed and cared for is not the same across the country. In response, a national sepsis quality improvement working group was formed in 2023 to create a programme to improve the quality of care. It will focus on the early identification, timely treatment and management of sepsis, and post-sepsis care.
The first phase of the sepsis programme is to refine, test and implement pathways and tools in hospitals, ambulances and urgent care settings.
The national sepsis quality improvement working group plays a vital role by contributing to the planning of improvement initiatives and making them happen.
Sharing your lived experience
Your lived experience of sepsis will be very helpful as we plan and implement meaningful improvements to health care services.
We are looking for consumers who are willing to share their experiences to contribute to the design and implementation of our improvement programme.
Role as a working group member
As a member of the sepsis quality improvement working group, you will:
The group will meet at least fortnightly on Thursday afternoons, and possibly more often if the project needs this. Meetings will usually be held online via Zoom and in-person meetings will be agreed in advance by members.
Payment
You will be paid for your time, attendance fees and travel expenses reimbursement. We follow the Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission guidelines about how much to pay members of advisory groups.
