Aotearoa New Zealand patient experience survey logo, which comprises three speech bubbles in shades of blue sitting above blue writing that says ‘He ara aupiki, he ara auheke’ and underneath in smaller blue writing, ‘Aotearoa New Zealand patient experience survey’ Our adult hospital patient experience surveys are designed to find out what went well and what can be improved about patients’ experience of their inpatient and outpatient care in Aotearoa New Zealand’s public hospitals.

The feedback gathered is used to help improve the quality of care, patient safety and access to health services. Information gathered at local, regional and national levels is used to benchmark patient experiences across the country and improve services locally.

The surveys are run every 3 months and cover different aspects of hospital inpatient and outpatient experience, including communication, partnership, physical and emotional needs, cultural safety and access to care.

The surveys are completed online, in either English or Te Reo Māori. Invitations are sent by email and/or SMS. Participation is voluntary. Survey responses are anonymous unless people choose to provide their contact details.

Adult hospital inpatient experience survey

The adult hospital inpatient experience survey provides information about the experience of care received by a selection of adults aged 15 years and over who stayed at least 1 night in a public hospital during the survey period. Children under the age of 15 are not surveyed. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. The survey has been running since 2014. Over 3,000 people respond each quarter.

A maternity-specific module was added in May 2025 to provide more information about the experiences of people receiving hospital maternity inpatient care.

Adult hospital outpatient experience survey

The adult hospital outpatient experience survey provides information about the experience of care received by a selection of adults aged 15 years and over who attended a public hospital-based outpatient clinic appointment (either in-person or by telephone or video) during the survey period. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. The survey was launched in August 2023 in a small number of districts, with the remaining districts joining in subsequent survey rounds. Over 13,000 people responded to the survey in the February 2025 survey round.
