Kia āta kōwhiri Choosing Wisely

The Choosing Wisely campaign seeks to reduce harm from unnecessary and low-value tests and treatment.

The aged residential care programme is profiling some of the great work done in the sector. Here we look at how Oceania Healthcare is using music to enrich the lives of its residents.

Since launching their I Love Music programme in 2017, Oceania Healthcare have provided hundreds of their residents with an individual MP3 player that is loaded with their own personalised playlist. Research shows that listening to favourite songs from our past – particularly from our teens and early 20’s triggers long term memories, lifts mood and increases sociability.

In September 2017 the profound impact of I Love Music was recognised by the New Zealand Aged Care Association where the initiative won the Supreme Award for Overall Excellence in Aged Care. The programme is as popular as ever amongst residents and their families as Oceania Healthcare continue to offer an ever increasingly diverse range of music to all residents at every level of care.
